The HIV Education and Prevention Project of Alameda County (Casa Segura)

Provides basic needs services including showers, laundry service, food pantry, a safe environment, free HIV and Hepatitis C testing, and general referrals without a lengthy intake process.

Outreach team canvasses areas in Oakland to distribute harm reduction supplies (condoms, safer crack smoke kits), conduct syringe exchange, provide educational materials, and collaborate with local service providers.

Fixed-site program providing sterile syringes, overdose prevention training, HIV/Hepatitis C counseling, testing and referral, herbal/acupuncture services, mobile abscess/wound care, unstructured harm reduction workshops, individual risk reduction counseling, and hot cooked meals.

Mobile unit operating 20 hours per week within Oakland to increase access to sterile syringes for injection drug users who cannot access fixed exchange sites.

Secured drop boxes in public areas for safe disposal of used syringes; outreach team provides sterile syringes and education in return.

Training and technical assistance on using naloxone to reverse opioid overdoses, including one-on-one trainings, train-the-trainer workshops, and support for agencies becoming naloxone distribution sites.

HIV and Hepatitis C education and prevention at exchange sites, drop-in center, community-based organizations, and outreach; includes individual risk reduction counseling, harm reduction workshops, HIV 101 groups, training for officials, free condoms, and safer sex information.

Establishes referral networks and supports client enrollment in care for HIV/HCV follow-up, including assistance with health insurance enrollment and finding a medical home.

State-certified counselors provide rapid HIV and HCV testing with results in 20 minutes, along with confirmatory and viral load testing.
